Purpose of the Policy
The Canadian Association of Research Ethics Boards (CAREB-ACCER) collects personal information in the regular course of its activities. Personal information is any information about an identifiable person (e.g. name, address, phone number, etc.).
The purpose of this policy is to establish rules that govern the collection, use and disclosure of personal information by CAREB-ACCER in a manner that recognizes the need to balance the right of privacy of individuals with respect to their personal information with CAREB-ACCER’s need to collect, use, and/or disclose that personal information in order to fulfill its purpose.
CAREB-ACCER commits to ensuring that all personal information gathered by CAREB-ACCER is kept confidential and is treated in a manner that a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances.
CAREB-ACCER’s key principles are:
Collecting and Using Information
CAREB-ACCER will only collect personal information that is required to provide its services and/or is required for licensing or legal purposes.
Personal employee information will only be collected to provide benefits and for payroll and performance management purposes.
When you visit CAREB-ACCER’s web site, the following information is automatically collected:
- information about your computer, including your IP address, the type of operating system and browser you use, and your computer’s location
- what pages you visit on CAREB-ACCER’s site and what links you click on
- what other sites you’ve visited recently
CAREB-ACCER does not systematically collect any information about the identity of individuals searching CAREB-ACCER’s website. CAREB-ACCER collects the statistical information listed above from your visit to CAREB-ACCER’s website in order to help CAREB-ACCER:
- develop content that responds to the interests of site visitors; and
- evaluate CAREB-ACCER’s products and services.
When personal information is collected, CAREB-ACCER will explain how it will be used and will obtain your consent to collect, use, and disclose it.
Limiting Use and Disclosure of Information
CAREB-ACCER will only use your personal information for the purposes for which it has obtained your consent.
CAREB-ACCER may provide your information to other parties:
- when CAREB-ACCER has your consent to do so; and/or
- when CAREB-ACCER is required or permitted to do so by law.
CAREB-ACCER will protect your information with appropriate procedures and security measures and dispose of it by means of shredding, or other methods, to protect the security of the information no longer required. The personal information collected by CAREB-ACCER is kept and/or maintained at the head office of CAREB-ACCER and each employee and volunteer of CAREB-ACCER is required to agree to not share, copy, or disclose any personal information to any third party for any reason, other than as required under law or for the purposes for which you provided your personal information to CAREB-ACCER.
Your personal information is kept until the stated purpose is completed. For example, if you gave CAREB-ACCER your personal information to obtain membership benefits, CAREB-ACCER will keep this information until you are no longer a member of CAREB-ACCER and only for as long as it must be kept under law.
Providing information Access and Accuracy
Upon written request, and proof of identification, CAREB-ACCER will provide you with the personal information that it has on file about you.
