Dear CAREB members,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Research Ethics Boards (CAREB), I am pleased to issue the CAREB guidance document "Reporting of Unanticipated Problems including Adverse Events to Research Ethics Boards in Canada". This document is intended to assist the research ethics community in Canada in standardizing the reporting of unanticipated problems, including certain adverse events, and should be viewed as a recommendation only.
Dear colleagues,
Over the years there have been varying and inconsistent interpretations with respect to ethical practices when the Tri-Council Financial Monitoring Visit teams have come to institutions to do their audits.
CAREB is making available all presentations to our membership where the presenter has provided authorization for posting.

Dear CAREB Members,
For those of you who didn't attend Susan Zimmerman's PRE update on April 30 at the CAREB National Conference, we were informed that PRE decided that REB administrators could not hold membership on REBs, and could not conduct delegated reviews. I took this information to the Research Ethics Policy and Advisory Committee at U of T. We decided that a letter should be written outlining the importance of membership to U of T's REB system and the potential implications to U of T and other research institutions if this decision is implemented.
Joan Rachlin, Executive Director of Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R), attended the 2010 CAREB National Conference in Montreal and wrote about her experiences in PRIM&R's blog Ampersand.

Dear CAREB members,
To those attending the CAREB annual conference in Montreal with a particular interest in external SAE reporting.... Laurel Evans and Janet Manzo will be providing an update from the CAREB SAE Working Group on May 1 at the 11:30 to 12:15 Panel Session. We are hoping that we will have Health Canada's response in time to include in our update.
Dear Members of the CAREB List-Serve:
Attached is some information related to an important initiative that is aimed at implementing a collaborative kind of review process for multi-centre studies. Originally created for pandemic influenza studies, the pilot project’s mandate has been expanded to include public and population health research. We hope that most of the REBs in Canada will be willing to participate in this project, and hence are sending this updated information to you.
Dear CAREB members,
In response to the call for final public comment on the revised Draft 2nd Edition of the TCPS, I am happy to advise you that I have submitted the official CAREB response on behalf of the Board of Directors and the CAREB Public Affairs Committee (see link below).
Dear CAREB members,
Dear Colleagues:
The University of Alberta is in the process of re-organizing its Research Ethics Boards. To assist us with that task, we are seeking information from our colleagues across Canada about the number of REBs at your institutions, as well as some details about the your REB review processes.
We intend to share our results with other institutions. We have found that there is very little data available about some details of REB review, and think it might be useful to everyone to have an idea of the range of practices at Universities and Research Institutions across Canada.
Dear CAREB colleague,
You are invited to participate in an online survey conducted by Lori Walker, under the supervision of Dr. Michelle McGinn, Associate Professor in the Department of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies, Faculty of Education, Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Lori is the Senior Research Ethics Officer at Brock University and is conducting this research as partial fulfillment of a Master of Education degree. The data collected will also be shared with the Canadian Association of Research Ethics Boards.
Ms. Grabowski,
On behalf of the Canadian Association of Research Ethics Boards (CAREB) Board of Directors and our membership across Canada, I would like to submit the attached (see below) response to the call for comments on the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) Draft National Standard for Research Ethics Boards reviewing biomedical clinical trials regulated by Health Canada.
